Controlled Feeding ‘Advanced’

∆VAT Sensor and FBFC Servo control unit

After implementing the BASICS program, additional yield improvement will be gained by installing the ∆VAT / FBFC control unit. The primary purpose of this unit is controlled tobacco feeding. Instead of controlling air speed, ∆VAT / FBFC controls directly on an optimal combination of:

  • Tobacco Loading
  • Tobacco Speed
  • Tobacco Slip Ratio (∆VAT; Difference between air and tobacco speed)

This unique combination is handled through our ∆VAT sensor that is placed in front of the maker, applying a combination of high-end optics and high speed camera images. Real time processing of this data by the embedded hardware (FPGA / DSP) provides direct control of the FBFC Servo driven valve behind the airlock of the maker.

In summary the ∆VAT / FBFC control unit provides increased CPK (cigarettes per kg) by:

  • Controlled tobacco bulk density; ‘volume feeding’ (filling power)
  • Minimized Cut Filler degradation; AMF-control (Average Mean Fiber)
  • Minimized difference between air and tobacco speed; Slip ratio > 0.7; (∆VAT)

JOA controlled feeding provides significant filling power improvement resulting into increase CPK. On average ∆VAT / FBFC systems have a return on investment of approximately 2 years.

For indicative testing (AMF and Bulk density) of controlled feeding Yield improvement, JOA has test facilities available in Delft the Netherlands and Charlotte NC, USA. For more extensive measurements JOA can provide on-site testing equipment and support.
